Karachi, September 26, 2013 (PPI-OT): DHL Express Pakistan, part of Deutsche Post DHL, the world’s leading postal and logistics group, partnered with WWF Pakistan to mark its Global Volunteer Day 2013 with employees taking part in Nature Conservation through Mangrove Plantation at the WWF Wetland Center at Sanspit. This initiative was made as part of its global drive to give back to local communities and to inculcate a passion for volunteerism among employees.
Sarfaraz Siddiqui, Managing Director, DHL Express Pakistan said, “Global Volunteer Day is a global community-based initiative that demonstrates our firm commitment towards helping local communities and inspires the spirit of volunteerism in our employees.
This year, we conducted a mangrove plantation drive in partnership with WWF Pakistan under the Go Green umbrella. Mangroves are an important part of the ecological landscape and help in preventing land erosion. Hence, we decided to join hands with WWF Pakistan in conserving this precious resource and contribute positively towards the environment we work in.”
A team of 50 DHL employees visited the WWF Wetland Center at Sandspit and planted mangrove saplings. This initiative will help out with efforts to preserve the mangrove forests in Pakistan. In recent years, the ecosystem balance has been disturbed by the shrinking forests resulting in decreased population of fish and shrimp which breed in shallow waters near mangrove trees. Hence, this activity is just one step towards correcting this grave issue.
Besides Mangrove Plantation, DHL Express Pakistan also carried out a book donation drive in various underprivileged schools across the country. Some of the schools visited were, Care Foundation Lahore, The Citizen Foundation Karachi, School of Special Education for Deaf Students Faisalabad, Aims Al-Noor Institute of Modern Science School Sialkot, Mashal Model School Islamabad and Amal-e-Danish School Khuda ki Basti and Surjani Town Karachi.
Introduced in Asia Pacific in 2008, Volunteer Day has expanded into Americas, Middle East, Africa and Europe over the years, and continues to build on its success by involving more employees than ever before. In 2012, the initiative was rolled out globally with tremendous success – 62,000 volunteers in about 120 countries and territories participated in more than 1,000 community programs.
For Global Volunteer Day 2013, Deutsche Post DHL offices around the world are participating in many diverse community projects in support of various local causes. These programs deliver to the company’s three Corporate Responsibility programs – GoTeach (championing education), GoGreen (protecting the environment) and GoHelp (delivering help).
