Karachi, November 21, 2012 (PPI-OT): Cricket Companion, a mobile phone app launched in2007 and one of the most downloaded apps on the Nokia Ovi Store bagged the P@SHA ICT Award 2012 in the “Best Mobile Application Category”. The cricket-centric mobile app was a huge success as it provided updated content to cricket fans across the globe. The app was developed before the 2007 Cricket World Cup and instantly became the top choice of cricket fans for its design and intuitive user experience.

The app was promoted through forums and SEO techniques where fans were routed to the Cricket Companion website to download the app. Users could also share the app with friends and family, thus penetrating it further in the fan base.

The 2008 IPL season saw an immense surge in the popularity of the app in India, which was fuelled in by a promotional deal between Cricket Companion and Zenga, making it the official IPL scorecard. By 2010, the app had more than seven million downloads worldwide.

Cricket Companion is mostly downloaded on Nokia devices, due to the consistent efforts of the Nokia Store to promote the app. In its initial days, Nokia promoted the app across the world as a featured app which attracted a huge user base towards it. Nokia also picked Cricket Companion to promote developers on their OS platform.

One such platform was Nokia cricket offering during the 2011 Cricket World Cup where the company put together a special portal with Cricket Companion as the featured app along with other apps and games related to the sport.

Speaking on the success of Cricket Companion, Rabia Nizami, Area Head DX, Nokia Near East said, “I would like to extend my felicitations to the Cricket Companion team on achieving the award for the Best Mobile Application in 2012.
