Karachi, August 17, 2016 (PPI-OT):The Intellectual Property Organization (IPO) officials presented the draft Geographical Indications Protection law (GI) to an audience of lawyers, businessmen and bureaucrats at a consultative session at a local hotel in Karachi. President Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (UNISAME) Zulfikar Thaver thanked IPO for the draft of GI protection law and said it was long overdue and requested IPO to now expedite the process of making it a law.
“According to me GI is a form of Intellectual Property Right. It is a marketing tool for a businessman and for the sector it is a tag adding value to the product” he elaborated. Thaver said we should protect our GI Logo and maintain its reputation by research and development. Every effort must be made to maintain the bench mark and keep up the reputation of its characteristics and features.
He said under no circumstances the certification must be entrusted to any trade association as it will result in conflict of interest. He urged IPO to facilitate the SMEs who are engaged in the business of exporting or selling in domestic markets GI items of repute due to their origin. He said many SMES are in Basmati rice, fruits, spices and commodities and also cottage industries and are looking forward to IPO protection.
It is the SMES who are adding value to GI items and the GI is the major concern of the SMES who are the true guardian of the GI logo. Prominent among those who spoke were the Director Generals of IPO, TDAP, Registrar of Trade Marks, Zahid Khwaja on behalf of REAP, Feroz Ahmed of SMEDA, chairman of PIPRA and Dr Owais Hassan Shaikh IPO expert.
