Islamabad, June 15, 2015 (PPI-OT): Federal Minister for Commerce, Eng. Khurram Dastagir held a meeting with the key stakeholders of Pakistani Carpet Exporters, which was organized by Punjab Board of Investment and Trade (PBIT), says a press release received from Lahore here today. The major stakeholders of the carpet industry were present in the meeting and they voiced their problems to the Minister.
They informed the Minister that Turkey is the second biggest imported of Pakistani Capet, but recently Turkey has increase the import duty to 50 % which will greatly affect the Pakistani export of carpet. Turkey has increased 50 % on only carpet, beings the luxury tem, as it has increased only 25 % on all other items. The carpet exporters requested the Ministry to help the in this issue and help reduce the duty imposed by Turkey.
The carpet industry of Pakistan is one of the best in the world regarding colour schemes, weaving and the wool quality. The total export of carpets to Turkey is worth $27 million only, which can be increased to a higher level.
The Minister assured the exporters that the Government is planning to sign FTA with Turkey, Thailand and South Korea. The Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Turkey can boost the trade with Pakistan. He also assured them that he will try to get participation for the carpet industry of Pakistan in the Russian trade exhibitions, so that Pakistan can capture new markets for its carpet Productions, like Russia, South America and Korea. He said that FTA with Turkey, Thailand and South Korea is in the plans of Govt.
The Minister also assured the delegation to play his part in convincing Turkey to reduce the duty to at least 25%. Later on talking’s to the media the Minister stated that it was the vision of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to have healthy trade relations with all countries.
He said that the trade with India is still not affected due to its aggressive statements, but if India continues the attitude, trade can also affect. He further said that without trade, the people cannot get economic prosperity, and PML- govt. is committed to improve trade relations with all the countries.
