Economic isolation is no longer possible in new global scenario: Abdul Rahim Janoo

Karachi, April 20, 2015 (PPI-OT): Economic isolation from the neighbouring countries is no longer possible in new global scenario. Nevertheless, a quantum jump in the magnitude of Non-Tariff Measures (NTM) to restrict the trade has become a common observation throughout the world.

This was stated by Abdul Rahim Janoo, Senior Vice President of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) in a meeting with Gerald Duda, Chief Technical Advisor of SAARC TPN and Ms. Susana, Incharge NTM Programme who visited the Federation House Karachi on 20th April 2015. M.A Lodhi, Secretary General of FPCCI, Dr. Ayub Mehar Director General R and D, Ahmed Zaman Khan, Director NTM Desk have also participated in the meeting.

While sharing his views, the FPCCI’s Senior Vice President Mr. Rahim Janoo stated that the FPCCI is the apex trade body that works for increasing trade and commercial activities in the country. It has more than 60 Chambers and 110 registered Trade Association bodies.

Mr. Rahim Janoo said to identify the NTM is not simple task as there is no agreed definition of NTMs. The NTMs are also becoming a key topic of negotiations not only in North-South but also in South-South contexts. FPCCI greatly appreciate and acknowledge the support of GIZ to solve this issue in SAARC by helping the Working Group for Regional Trade.

In a brief presentation on ‘Non-Tariff Measures in South Asia: The Facilitation Desk in FPCCI to support the Exporters’, Dr. Ayub Mehar, Director General R and D explained that Pakistani exporters have been facing various types of difficulties pertaining to NTM especially from India and Afghanistan.

He further said that most of the obstacles are related to problems in getting visas and harassment during visits, problems in handling at Ports, constraints of land transportation and dealings of customs, problems in land transportation, problems in certification of requirements and problems at the port of entry. He also emphasized that there is need to educate exporters through workshops, seminars etc.

On this occasion, Mr. Gerald Duda, Chief Technical Advisor of SAARC TPN appreciated the role of FPCCI on identifying and resolving the issues of exporters. However, Ms. Susana, Incharge NTM Programme obtained the details on the mechanism of educating exporters.

Mr. Ahmed Zaman Khan, the Director NTM Desk (GIZ) Funded Unit said that the facilitation desk has been established at FPCCI that is helping Pakistani exporters to the South Asian countries. In the last, the guests visited numerous departments of FPCCI especially NTM Desk and appreciated the working environment there.
