Islamabad, April 25, 2014 (PPI-OT): Zakaria Usman, President Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) met the delegation of Pakistan Flour Mills Association who visited FPCCI under the leadership of Muhammad Yousuf, Chairman (Sindh Circle) along with Sheikh Mumtaz Ahmed, former Vice President FPCCI to discuss the issue of supply of wheat in Karachi.
The delegation informed the President FPCCI that the provincial government has imposed Section 144 on the transportation of wheat to Karachi due to which there is shortage of wheat in the city. Before the implementation Section 144 on 22nd April, 2014 the wheat was transported to Karachi with the payments of heavy bribes to the authorities of Food Department, Police and Excise Departments.
They further informed that in Karachi wheat is not grown and it is transported from interior Sindh. The Floor Mills Association demands the permission for transportation of wheat from interior Sindh to Karachi without any hurdles and corruption of Food, Police and Excise Departments.
Zakaria Usman said that the flour mills are protesting over harassment by officials of the food department police and excise officials who are seeking bribes at check-posts in the interior Sindh. They were constrained to go on protest and call on strike due to which flour supply to different areas has been suspended and if the strike continued further, it could cause severe shortage of flour in the Karachi and other cities of Sindh.
The FPCCI Chief further added that the matter needs the attention of the Chief Minister Sindh to intervene and resolve the issues of the Pakistan Floor Mills Association (Sindh) by removing the Section 144 and issuance of necessary instructions to the concerned departments to ensure smooth supply of wheat from interior Sindh to Karachi.
